The IRIE Classroom Toolbox is a school-based, violence prevention programme for early childhood teachers. The toolbox is appropriate for teachers of children aged 3-8 years. The Toolbox provides teachers with a variety of tools to use when interacting with and teaching young children.
This teacher manual is the ‘theory’ book of the IRIE Classroom Toolbox. It gives a description of all the tools introduced in the Toolbox and provides guidance on how and why to use each one. The complete manual, as well as the individual modules are available below.
Learn moreThis teacher manual is the ‘practical’ book of the IRIE Classroom Toolbox. It includes 1) detailed lesson plans to help teachers teach classroom rules, friendship skills, and emotions, 2) games that can be used to help children develop skills they need to do well in school (e.g. learning to listen, wait, follow instructions), 3) classroom activities that promote children’s social and emotional skills integrated into everyday teaching and learning activities, and 4) songs to reinforce the concepts introduced in the IRIE Classroom Toolbox. The complete manual, as well as the individual sections are available below.
Learn moreThis page contains downloadable forms for teachers to make behaviour plans for individual children and for the whole class. These forms include an assessment checklist, an individual behaviour planning form, a class-wide behaviour planning form and a problem-solving form. Learn moreThe IRIE Classroom Toolbox Visual Aids are pictures used for teaching classroom rules, friendship skills and emotion skills to children. The pictures are available in black & white and in colour. They can be glued onto card to make visual aids.
Learn moreThe IRIE Classroom Stories Book includes fourteen pictorial stories that include common problems faced by young children in school and how to overcome them (e.g. how to share materials, waiting for a turn, and working together). The stories are suitable for children aged 3-8 years and aim to promote children’s social and emotional skills. The stories have no words and the pictures are used to promote discussion and to encourage children to problem-solve. Each story has a one-page teacher guide giving guidance on the aims, key vocabulary, discussion points and suggested questions. The stories are available for download as a complete set or as individual books.
Learn moreThe IRIE Classroom Toolbox Additional Resources include 1) Illustrations to make a Classroom Responsibility Chart, 2) Illustrations to make a Classroom Timetable, 3) IRIE Notes to send positive notes home to parents about their child’s behaviour and achievements, and 4) An IRIE Classroom Teacher Oath for teachers to sign and display in their classroom to show their commitment to using the programme.
